The red-crowned crane is only sexually mature at the age of three or four years. Its nest consists of grass, shield and branches. The eggs are turned up to 20 times a day. The courtship dance of the red-crowned crane is one of the most complex among cranes. Both adult and young cranes participate. One bird starts and everyone else follows. They rise on their toes and spread their wings with splayed coverts. In China, the red-crowned crane is a first degree-protected species next to the large panda.
